For his next feature Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan has assembled a cast of extremely competent performers. Most of the actors will play those who were intimately involved in the Manhattan Project. This effort resulted in the development of the first nuclear bomb, which caused widespread destruction and changed the course of history forever.
Josh Hartnett portrays Ernest Lawrence, an American nuclear scientist who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1939. During the Manhattan Project, he was known for his work on the separation of uranium isotopes. Along with Hartnett, the 2023 biographical thriller will feature Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh and others.

Josh Hartnett was born on July 21, 1978 to parents Daniel Thomas Hartnett and Wendy Anne. He is best known for his role as Michael Fitzgerald in the 1997 television series Cracker. He later appeared in films such as Halloween H20: 20 Years Later, The College, Suicide Girls, Pearl Harbor, O, Black Hawk Down, 40 Days and 40 Nights, Lucky Number Slevin and others.
Hartnett has appeared in films such as The Black Dahlia, Resurrecting the Champ, 30 Days of Night and I Come with the Rain. He played Ethan Chandler in Penny Dreadful from 2014 to 2016 and was nominated for a Fangoria Chainsaw Award for his performance. Hartnett is married to Tamsin Egerton, an English actress, with whom he has three children. In a recent interview with the Independent, the actor discussed his experience working on Oppenheimer with Christopher Nolan.
“Chris has certain rules: no one is allowed to use a cell phone, no one is late, no one has an assistant. Everyone is there as equals, which is important for me to maintain a healthy spirit,” he said.
Hartnett also mentioned that he had already visited with the director around the beginning of the Batman films. Although a fan of the director, the former was not interested in portraying a superhero and felt that he might be able to take part in The Prestige. Nolan, on the other hand, cast Christian Bale as Batman and directed The Prestige, starring Bale, Hugh Jackman and David Bowie. During the interview, Hartnett said he felt “really lucky” to be working with the famous director after all these years.
“I consider myself extremely lucky that he still sees me as someone he wants to work with all these years later; I’m a firm believer in making things work when they’re supposed to,” he noted.
