Joshua Kaplan, who served 22 years for murder, is now on a new path.
Jews traditionally perform teshuvah, or repentance, during these weeks seeking forgiveness first from the people they have offended and then from God. This order has a special meaning for Kaplan (39).
After spending 22 years in prison as a member of a very limited demographic, Jews serving time for murder, Kaplan was released from prison on May 2. He is now trying to rebuild his life.

Yet would he run? Kaplan would likely spend the rest of his years in prison, as he faced a 15-year to life sentence.
Keith Alan Taylor, a 40-year-old Union City security guard, was killed by 17-year-old Kaplan during a robbery. Taylor, a 20-year veteran of the Vietnam War, leaves behind a wife and two children. When he died, he had no weapons.
Kaplan is a tall and strong man. He looks more like a bespectacled high school teacher with a gray beard than a California prison inmate. He grew up in a north Berkeley household that practiced Judaism, where a menorah burned next to the Christmas tree. The family was not religious, but young Josh spent several summers at Camp Kee Tov in Berkeley, a Jewish day camp.
Although he assures that he does not hold anyone else responsible for the decisions he made as a teenager, his parents divorced when he was 8 years old. “I had a lot of internal emotional struggle that I wasn’t sure how to handle or express,” he said.
The path to reconciliation
He started smoking marijuana, he said, and by high school had progressed to using hallucinogenic mushrooms, LSD and methamphetamine. In high school, he frequently used drugs and alcohol, which quickly led to his absence from Berkeley High.
He ran away from home and dropped out of school at the age of 17. His mother, Pat Cleveland, who now lives in San Francisco, claimed that she was aware that her son was “in a world of pain and pain”, and that despite her best attempts to communicate with him, he felt helpless. Things got out of control immediately.
On August 26, 1990, Kaplan participated in a four-person robbery of Kobe Precision Inc. in Hayward, where one of the four, 24-year-old William Gilbert, previously worked as a security guard.
When he hid in the bushes before the robbery, according to Kaplan, he was high on methamphetamine, LSD and PCP. He said Taylor, a private security guard, was patrolling the business when Gilbert walked in. The robbers allegedly forced Taylor to open the door for them.

In a recent interview, Kaplan recalled, “I remember being in the building and another man dragging Keith Taylor down the hall where they put him in a closet.” “I was given a shotgun some time ago. The [closet] the door opening and someone forcing me to shoot him are the next things I remember.
Much of that morning, according to Kaplan, is clouded in her memory by medication and, she speculates, blocked out by her subconscious. The memory of her pulling the trigger, however, is very clear.
