Julia Roberts on Advice She’d Give Her Younger Self: ‘It’s All Going to Be Okay—and Don’t Pluck Your Eyebrows’ (Exclusive)

Ask Julia Roberts what advice she would give her 19-year-old self, and she’ll cut to the chase: “Stand up straighter,” she says. “Everything will be fine and don’t pluck your eyebrows.”

The star, 56, mother to twins Hazel and Phinnaeus and son Henry, 16, with husband Danny Moder, posted photos of the twins when they were babies to mark their 19th birthdays on Nov. 28, prompting PEOPLE to ask both Roberts and Mahershala Ali , hers Leave the world behind costar, what would they say to their younger selves.

“Be patient,” says Ali, 49, “because things will work out as they should. I always tell myself to be full of prayer, patience and perseverance. Those three things and I feel you have it all, in my humble opinion.”

Sam Esmail jokes with Julia Roberts. Friendship was ‘weird’ at first as he is ‘obsessed with her movies’ (Exclusive)

The two Oscar winners, whose new thriller is on Netflix on Friday, met for the first time at some event, although they are not 100 percent sure which one. They reconnected at the 2019 Academy Awards when Roberts presented the Oscar for Best Picture Green book (for which Ali also won his second award for Best Supporting Actor).

Roberts says, “That was another moment where I felt myself slowly entering his lexicon. I’m just entering. … Then on this film, [director Sam Esmail] and I was so excited that it worked out with Mahershala.”

Although their new film may have viewers on the edge of their seats, both actors are cautious when it comes to watching scary movies.

“I don’t like to be afraid,” says Roberts. Adds Ali, “Not anymore. I loved it as a kid. I watched Friday 13 at 8, 9 years old. Horror movies and creature features. Then I got into my teenage years and moved away from all that, and as an adult I’m not so interested in fear. … Roller coasters, I’m fine.”

Says Roberts with a smile, “I loved roller coasters when I was a kid growing up in Georgia; The Scream Machine at Six Flags was pretty great.”
