Julian Casablancas, 44, of New York answers the phone while driving through New York State and greets the caller with a very enthusiastic “hello!” He has chosen to stop the car in order to do the interview, as evidenced by the background noise.
Throughout Casablancas’ 20+ year career, he co-authored six albums with the Strokes and wrote some of their most recognizable songs. Now, he characterizes his surroundings in a less than enthusiastic manner: “Cross-shaped poles and trees can be seen everywhere. I wish I could send you photographs. I’m really out here by myself,” he claims. He jumps a couple of times during the talk when he sees men holding what he believes to be guns.
There are numerous topics to cover with Casablancas. His two bands, The Strokes and The Voidz (a side project that has put out two albums since 2013), continue to tour and write new music. Additionally, the previously unheard song that Daft Punk used to commemorate the re-release of their legendary Random Access Memory (2013) is still in the air.

Aside from trees, crucifixes, and weapons, it seems more interesting to begin the discourse by discussing the 2022 documentary Meet Me in the Bathroom, which is based on Lizzy Goodman’s 2017 book of the same name. The Strokes were the movement’s leaders, and Goodman, who moved to New York in 1999 at the age of 19, recounts the generational effects of those bands in over 700 pages. According to EL PAS music critic Diego A. Manrique, that was “the last powerful rock scene, after grunge and Britpop.”
