JPMorgan Chase has agreed to pay $290 million to settle a federal lawsuit filed by victims of Jeffrey Epstein, who accused the nation’s largest bank of long-term complicity in the notorious financier’s sex crimes.

After hours of statements from a number of top officials, including CEO Jamie Dimon, the proposed settlement was announced Monday. According to Jane Doe 1 v. JPMorgan Chase Bank, which was filed last year in federal court in Manhattan, the bank facilitated Epstein’s sex-trafficking operation by allowing him to withdraw substantial amounts of cash over a 15-year period, even after the financier’s criminal and civil – the legal issues were widely publicized. A separate lawsuit by the US Virgin Islands is still pending.

The deal comes a month after Deutsche Bank, which took over Epstein’s accounts after JPMorgan rejected it, agreed to pay $75 million to settle a related claim.

The extent to which individuals who knew or worked with Epstein were aware of his crimes, helped him commit them, or chose to ignore them is at the heart of the litigation. Lawyers for the victims claim that despite frequent warnings about Epstein, the bank profited from the business he brought to the institution.

According to David Boies, an attorney representing the plaintiffs, “Taken together or individually, the historical returns from the banks that provided financial services to Jeffrey Epstein speak for themselves.” It’s taken too long, but this is a huge day for justice and for the survivors of Jeffrey Epstein.

The settlement, according to a JPMorgan spokesman, is “in the best interests of all parties, especially the survivors” of Epstein’s abuse.

In an emailed statement, Patricia Wexler said, “We would never have continued doing business with him if we believed he was using our bank in any way to help commit heinous crimes.”

More than 100 people could seek damages after the lawsuit in New York was granted class-action status on Sunday, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Among the largest publicly known settlements in a civil anti-trafficking lawsuit, according to Mary Graw Leary, senior associate dean for academic affairs at the Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law, is the settlement at issue. She said it was a “significant victory for survivors of sex trafficking and a warning to those mainstream companies that create a public image of ignorance but continue to profit from the sex trafficking of the most vulnerable by looking the other way.”

In 2008, Epstein pleaded guilty to state charges of encouraging child prostitution, but it wasn’t until 2019 that he was detained on suspicion of trafficking scores of girls, some as young as 14. In August of that year, he was discovered dead in a holding cell, leaving many unanswered concerns about who else might have aided him in his crimes and how his operation took so long. The New York medical examiner ruled his death a suicide. He was 66 years old.

Beginning in 1998, Epstein held accounts at JPMorgan for 15 years. The deal came after several top bankers at the bank, including Dimon and wealth management executive Mary Erdoes, were removed from their positions. Jes Staley, a former executive at JPMorgan who the bank claimed fought internally for Epstein, was also questioned.

Elon Musk, the inventor of Tesla, and Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the co-founders of Google, have received subpoenas in a legal dispute involving a number of other celebrities besides JPMorgan. They came under intense scrutiny over Epstein’s failed attempts to recruit Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates for a charity fund.
