Julie Andrews Would Be ‘Happy’ If There’s a Princess Diaries 3 But Says ‘Sometimes It’s Best to Leave a Good Thing Alone’

Julie Andrews is in line to close the chapter The The Princess Diaries.

The actress, 88, told TODAY.com that “sometimes it’s best to leave a good thing alone” when asked if there would be a third installment The The Princess Diaries franchise.

“It’s been a while since the two of them Diaries they were done and I’m not sure, but sometimes it’s best to leave a good thing alone. I don’t like it when people milk and milk and milk an object, you know, ’till it dies.”

It’s been 23 years since the first movie hit theaters. In it, Andrews played Queen Clarissa Renaldi opposite Anne Hathaway, who plays her granddaughter Mia Thermopolis.

The film follows Mia’s journey after learning that she is the heir to Genovia’s throne. Mia ascends the throne in the 2004 sequel. The The Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement. Noting that she’s been asked “so many times” about the next movie, Andrews told TODAY.com that she “would be very happy if we did another one. But I don’t expect that.”

In 2019, Hathaway revealed during an episode Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen that there is a “script for a third movie”.

“I want to do it. Julie wants to do it. Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen. We just don’t unless it’s perfect because we love it as much as you love it,” she said at the time Hathaway.

Andrews confirmed to TODAY.com that “there has been dialogue” about the project, but noted that “nothing has come to fruition.”

“And I think I might be wrong, but I think it’s delayed now. I can’t be sure,” Andrews said.

Hathaway told PEOPLE back in January 2023 that the release of the third film is “a process that requires patience.”

“Now everyone should consider themselves part of the film business because this is how long it actually takes to make things,” she said.
