Julie Inman Grant News

According to the Australian eSafety commissioner, Twitter is “inconsistent” in its response to government demands from Australia while following orders to censor political posts in Turkey.

In the weeks leading up to Turkey’s elections, Twitter disclosed earlier this month that it had responded to a court order by blocking access to four accounts and 409 tweets there. The four accounts apparently contained tweets from an activist, a journalist, and a businessman and were critical of Recep Tayyip Erdoan, the Turkish president.

Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter and a self-described free speech absolutist, defended the choice, saying the filtering was necessary as a result of Turkey’s threat to “throttle” Twitter in the nation.

According to Julie Inman Grant, the eSafety commissioner for Australia, Twitter’s failure to react to letters from her office or those of the communications minister, Michelle Rowland, regarding the platform’s obligations under Australian legislation regarding online safety, was a “terrible practise” on Wednesday.

According to estimates provided to the Senate by Inman Grant, Singapore is the location of Twitter’s lone remaining Asia Pacific public policy contact. She admitted the business did, in fact, reply to a court order questioning how Twitter was handling child abuse material online in February, but she claimed it took over three months and multiple extensions from her office.

We are currently evaluating that content since they have reacted to our legal compulsion warning regarding fundamental internet safety requirements, she said. Other than tweeting at me about a few issues, Elon Musk, to my knowledge, hasn’t officially responded to either the Safety Commissioner or the Minister.

Inman Grant said that Twitter considered the Turkey response as the “least bad decision” but that it was an inconsistent strategy when Greens senator David Shoebridge questioned whether Musk was just “responding to tyrants quickly” and was “contemptuous of democratic governments.”

“I’m not advocating for it. I wholeheartedly concur that the way they react to various governments is quite inconsistent. She said that there were still ongoing regulatory proceedings about internet safety when Shoebridge questioned what Australia might do to compel Twitter to respond to legal requests more quickly. If Twitter doesn’t reply to requests, it may be fined up to $700,000, but Shoebridge claimed this would be a “rounding error” for a billionaire like Musk.
