Julie Robinson Belafonte’s career

In the 1950s, Julie Robinson began her acting career. Carmen Jones, a 1954 film by Otto Preminger, was her debut. In this movie, she met Harry Belafonte, who played Joe. As a dancer in the ensemble, she also had a small role in the film.

After her debut, Robinson continued to work in the film industry, mainly in supporting roles. Her most recognizable roles are Mrs. Flanders in the drama “A Safe Place” (1971), directed by Henry Jaglom, and the appearance of Van Gogh’s sister-in-law in Lust for Life (1956), produced by Vincente Minnelli. In the Buck and the Gun west, she also took on the character of Ruth.

In addition to acting, Julie Robinson also did costume design. She designed the costumes for the films Let’s Do It Again (1975) and Uptown Saturday Night (1974), directed by Sidney Poitier, both starring Sidney Poitier. In both films, her husband Harry Belafonte appeared with famous actors such as Sidney Poitier and Bill Cosby.

Several Broadway productions featured costumes created by Robinson. She was known for her special sense of style and her talent for creating costumes that fit perfectly with the characters she worked on.
