Just minutes after Kate’s moving cancer update, spoiled brats Harry & Meghan plug their new show. They’re worlds apart

The distance was only 100 minutes, but it could have been 100 light years.

At 4.29pm on Monday afternoon, the Prince and Princess of Wales released a stunningly powerful three-minute film about Kate’s ongoing battle with cancer.

And at 6:09 p.m. Netflix released a promo for a new documentary series about Polo filmed by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Of course, it may have been an incredible coincidence, but if you believe that, then I can sell you some very questionable old Ford Cortinas.

One thing is undeniable, and that is that the separate posts perfectly summed up the lives of these two now very different couples.

One, depicting the heir to the throne and his wife in failing health, was an extremely moving, humbling and deeply inspiring insight into what it’s like to have a life-threatening illness when you have a young, loving family, regardless of wealth or status.

The other, featuring two spoiled renegade brats who ditched royal duty and service for a life of self-enriching Hollywood glitz and glamour, was a disgustingly misjudged self-promotional plug for a sports series only to be played by elite millionaires.

Whether Meghan and Harry deliberately rushed their promotion to try to spoil Kate and William’s big announcement or just to capitalize on the megaton global attention it immediately received, it went down like a thump of unwanted pigeon poop on the pavement.

All the newspaper front pages on Tuesday, from England and Australia to America and India, were dominated by images from the film Wales, with barely a cursory mention of Sussex’s bejeweled horse and mallet scam.

I can only begin to imagine the outraged screams of rage that came from a certain mansion in Montecito, California when the Sussexes realized that their latest money-grabbing venture had once again been overshadowed by their sworn sibling and sister-in-law at Kensington Palace.

But enough of those clowns. They have made their slimy beds of royal fleece and can lie in them.

Instead, let me pay tribute to the amazing mini-movie told by Kate about her cancer.

In 40 years of covering the royal family, I’ve never seen anything like Catherine’s video

First, it represents a seismic departure from anything the royals have ever done before.

As a former newspaper editor, I’m used to very short, concise, unemotional statements about anything to do with the private life or health of the royal family, if they even deign to comment.

But Kate and William know that we live in very different times now and that young people today expect a more sensitive, Instagram-friendly approach to sharing if the magic of the Monarchy is to be maintained.

The movie may have seemed a little silly to older people from the stiff upper lip generation, but I loved it.

It felt real, authentic and very human.

And that made me feel quite emotional watching it, probably because, like many other people, I’m currently having first-hand experience of someone very close to me going through the hell of cancer.

At its heart was the message that the dreaded Big C can strike anyone at any time, and it doesn’t matter how much money and privilege you have or how many tiaras you wear.

I thought Kate’s comment was perfect in its honesty, humility and hope.

First, there was a sense of relief that the chemotherapy was over for now.

Cancer drugs take a brutal toll on patients, physically and emotionally.

They can make you exhausted, nauseous, constipated; they cloud your brain, destroy your hair, break your nails, burn your mouth, make your palate bitter, kill your appetite.

That’s bad enough for a normal person out of the limelight.

But imagine what it’s like to go through all that as a princess who is expected to always look like that in public?

Kate is not prone to self-pity, but admitted: ‘The last nine months have been incredibly difficult for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant and we had to find a way to weather the stormy waters and unknown path. The cancer journey is complex, scary and unpredictable for everyone, but especially for those closest to you.’

It was such an eloquent description that will resonate so strongly with anyone with cancer, especially in acknowledging that those around you who love and care about you can have it just as hard as you.

Then Kate said something that will resonate even more with other cancer patients: “With humility, it also brings you face to face with your own vulnerabilities in a way you’ve never considered before, and with it a new perspective on everything.

“Above all, this time has reminded William and I to reflect and be grateful for the simple but important things in life that many of us often take for granted. Simply loving and being loved.”

Woof.

We hear a lot about the need to always remember what’s really important in life, but how much do we really think about it until something terrible happens that forces us to do so?

Kate is a woman who seemingly has everything many women would love – palaces, servants, virtually unlimited budgets for clothes and jewelry, global superstardom.

Nevertheless, cancer transformed her into a woman who would gladly give up all those material and transitory things for good health and the possibility to continue being with her family – ‘simply to love and be loved’.

It’s great to hear she’s currently cancer free, but I was also glad she said she knew she wasn’t out of the woods yet.

It will be at least five years before doctors can say with any confidence that she is cured, and as Kate said: ‘My road to healing and full recovery is long and I have to continue to take each day as it comes.’

We don’t know exactly what kind of cancer she had, or how difficult her treatment was, but we do know that it was serious and difficult enough that she has barely made any public appearances this year, and she hasn’t made a firm commitment to do more anytime soon.

To which I say, and I’m sure I speak for millions of others, take as much time as you need, Your Royal Highness.

Kate’s illness and prolonged forced absence from the public stage confirmed how loved and important she is to this country, as well as her immediate family, who all performed so brilliantly in the film.

Nothing defines the character of a human being more than how they respond to adversity, and Kate has met her greatest challenge with magnificent courage, dignity and grace.

The final words of her statement said everything you need to know about her: ‘To all those who continue their own cancer journey – I stand with you, side by side, hand in hand. From darkness can come light, so let that light shine.’

Before she was diagnosed with cancer, Kate was already a beloved public figure.

Now, as this film so suggestively emphasized, she has become a towering beacon of hope and inspiration for cancer patients around the world.

Our Queen-to-be is a national treasure we all feel very protective of now, and unlike the bitter Californian duo spewing their bile and filling their boots across the Atlantic, she is the epitome of what it really means to be royalty.
