Arrested on suspicion of corruption
In October 2023, Joytipriya Mallick was detained by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for her alleged involvement in ration scam and misappropriation of rupees. During India’s COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, he earned Rs 95 crore as food supply minister. He was arrested by the Education Directorate after filing a complaint against a businessman named Bakibur Rahman. After interrogating Rahman, the ED raided Malik’s residence on October 26, 2023 and seized several documents and stamps related to the scam. After Malik’s arrest, many AITMC leaders, including Mamata Banerjee, lashed out at the ED and the central government, accusing them of deliberately involving Malik in false cases. Banerjee’s mother said in an interview,
In the name of raids they overturned ghee bottles, oil bottles, took photos of sarees, cosmetics… My question is, why not a single BJP leader’s house was raided? Why were the houses of the BJP bandits not raided? …The LS elections are coming up in five months. Elections are underway in five states. Now a minister’s son’s house is being raided… We don’t believe in political revenge. I respect the Constitutional Chairman. So I kept silent. ”
It was later revealed that Malik allegedly distributed the money he received through drawing rations among three companies. In November 2023, his former personal assistant Abhijit Das told ED that Malik appointed Das’s mother and wife as directors of one such company without him being completely aware of the appointments. However, he claimed that after Das quit his job as Malik’s personal assistant, his mother and wife resigned as directors of the company. The ED later summoned his daughter Priyadarshini Mallick and his brother Debapriya Mallick for questioning.
