KK Venugopal is the 15th Attorney General of India. He was appointed as the Attorney General of India by the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, on 30 June 2017. Prior to becoming the Attorney General of India, he was a senior lawyer of the Supreme Court of India and a Constitutional Lawyer of India.

Kottayan Katankot Venugopal was born on 6 September 1931 (Sunday) (now 89 years old; 2020) in Kanhangad, Kasaragod district, Kerala, and was brought up and educated in Mangalore. His star sign is Virgo. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in physics from Madras Christian College, Chennai. He also studied law at Raja Lakhamgouda Law College, Belgaum, Karnataka.

His sister’s name is Nalini Vasudevan, who died on January 4, 2013.

Wife and children

On May 28, 1958, Venugopal married Shantha Konath Venugopal in a traditional marriage. The marriage gave birth to two sons and a daughter. The elder son is Krishnan Venugopal (a senior lawyer in the Supreme Court) and the younger son is Kannan Venugopal. The daughter is named Lakshmi Venugopal.

Profession

After completing his formal education, Venugopal started his legal career in Mysore in 1954. Thereafter, he started practicing in the Madras High Court under the guidance of his father and worked by his side for over 50 years. In 1972, he moved to Delhi and was appointed as a senior advocate in the Supreme Court of India. During his career, Venugopal handled several high-profile cases such as the Babri Masjid demolition case. In the case, BJP leaders LK Advani and Atal Bihari Vajpayee were accused of inciting protests that led to the demolition of the Babri Masjid. As the Attorney General of India, KK Venugopal has been in the spotlight many times and in March 2019, he appeared in the Supreme Court for the Narendra Modi government on the Rafale fighter jet deal and its related controversies.

  • In 2019, KK Venugopal had been heavily criticised in the Supreme Court for asking senior lawyer Anand Grover to address senior lawyer Indira Jaising as his ‘wife’ instead of ‘Ms. Jaising.’ Later, Indira Jaising was upset with the remark and asked Venugopal to retract his statement, saying that she herself was an independent individual with her own identity.
