Soon after graduating in 1979, Kailash Vijayvargiya entered politics by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJYM), the youth wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party. In 1983, he contested the Indore Municipal Corporation elections and became a councillor. During his tenure, Kailash brought some positive changes in Indore’s infrastructure and public services. In 1985, Kailash was appointed Chairman of the Standing Committee. In the same year, he became the National Coordinator of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. In 1993, he was appointed as the state minister of the Bharatiya Janata Party, responsible for the state of Gujarat.

Madhya Pradesh Cabinet Minister

Kailash served as a cabinet minister in the Madhya Pradesh government for about 12 years before handing over the central leadership to the BJP. On December 8, 2003, Kailash Vijayvargiya was sworn in as Cabinet Minister of the Government of Madhya Pradesh, responsible for public works, parliamentary affairs, urban management and development. Six months later, he acquired a portfolio of religious trusts, endowments and rehabilitation. On August 27, 2004, Kailash joined the Babla Gaur Council of Ministers as Minister of Public Works. Vijayvargiya was re-inducted into Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s Council of Ministers on December 4, 2005, and held charge of the public works, information technology and science and technology departments. After the 2008 Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections, Kailash was appointed Minister for Information Technology and Industries under Shivraj Singh Chouhan. During his tenure as IT minister, Kailash brought about 17 IT companies including TCS and Infosys to Indore. He also organized a global investor meetup in Madhya Pradesh, one of his biggest initiatives. He was also involved in the finalization of 259 MoUs for projects worth Rs 4.31 trillion. After the 2013 Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections, Vijayvargiya served as cabinet minister for the third time, responsible for urban development affairs.

In 1992, Kailash Vijayvargiya was appointed as the Vice-President of the BJP state (Madhya Pradesh). In 2015, he was appointed as the national general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party.   • In November 2019, Vijayvargiya built the world’s tallest octagonal metal statue of Lord Hanuman in Indore. Apparently, in 1999, a Mahatma told him that the city of Indore had some Pitra Dosh and therefore the city could not prosper. The Mahatma further suggested that if a statue of Lord Hanuman was installed on Pitru Parvat, the defects would be removed. Kailash then vowed not to eat until the largest statue of Hanuman was installed on Pitruparvat Island.
