- Kamal was campaigning for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Tirupalankundram constituency in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu when he accused Nathuram Godse (the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi) of Nathuram Godse for his statement He has sparked controversy by being described as independent India’s first Hindu extremist. His remarks caused an uproar among the public, with slippers even thrown at him, and a police complaint was subsequently filed against him.
- In 2018, he defended the use of abusive language in daily life while hosting the reality TV show Bigg Boss Tamil. He received huge criticism for this. The right-wing Hindu Makar Kazi (HMK) party demanded Kamal’s arrest for using foul language on public platforms.
- In 2017, a lawsuit was filed against Kamal for hurting people’s religious sentiments. He issued a statement that his country respects the book (Mahabharata) which treats women (Draupadi) where men gamble as mere objects. HMK party members filed a case against him before the Chennai City Police Commission and termed him “anti-Hindu”.
- In 2017, he spoke out against People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which opposed the Jallikattu festival (cattle drive festival) that is also part of the harvest festival, and demanded that it be banned. Kamal said after the controversy that if ‘Jallikattu’ is to be banned, then Biryani should also be banned.
- In 2016, the entire state of Tamil Nadu mourned the death of Jayalalithaa (politician). “My sympathies go out to those who relied on her,” Kamal wrote on Twitter. “My deepest condolences to those involved.” Some Twitter users criticized the actor’s remarks.
- In 2013, his film Vishwaroopam created some controversy. The film was banned because it was thought it might cause religious disharmony. Kamal was even threatened to leave Tamil Nadu. A faction of Tamil Nadu’s Muslim community even claimed that the film implies that all Muslims are terrorists. However, Kamal struck a deal with Muslims in Tamil Nadu and the ban was eventually lifted.
- After the 2015 Chennai floods, Kamal said he felt guilty for the flood victims and questioned where all the government tax money went. He was slammed by the then Tamil Nadu Finance Minister O. Pannerselvam, who said the actor was confused without understanding the actual situation.
- His film Hey Ram (2000) was protested by political parties because they believed that the film portrayed Mahatma Gandhi in a negative light.
- In 2004, he was forced to change the title of the film from Sandiyar to Virumandi after the Pudhiya Tamizhagham (political party) said the film’s title might create a caste-related controversy.
