Kannan Gopinathan is an IAS officer from Kerala. He came into limelight after resigning and expressed his displeasure over the deprivation of basic rights of J&K employees following the revocation of Article 370.

Kannan Gopinathan was born on Thursday, December 12, 1985 in Kottayam, Kerala (age 33 in 2018). His zodiac sign is Sagittarius. He graduated from Technical High School, Puttupalli, Kerala. He pursued his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Birla Institute of Technology, Meshra, Ranchi, Jharkhand.
In 2007, after graduating from college, he started working as a design engineer at a company called “Freescale Semiconductor” for four years. He also worked as a volunteer at a non-profit organization called AID India, where he provided education to underprivileged children. In April 2011, he started preparing for the civil services examination and after passing the examination and interview, he started training as an IAS officer in September 2012.

Kannan Gopinathan belongs to a Hindu Brahmin family. Little is known about his family. His wife, Himani Pathak, whom he met while volunteering with Aid India. They have a son named Adu.
Profession
Kannan’s first posting was as Assistant Collector in Delhi from July 2013 to July 2014. He was transferred to Mizoram and appointed as Deputy Collector of Hnahthial in September 2014. He worked for one and a half years and then was promoted to District Magistrate/Deputy Commissioner, Aizawl, Mizoram in February 2016.
He served as district collector of Aizawl until December 2017, after which he was posted as district collector of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. He has been appointed as Managing Director of Dadra and Nagar Haveli Power Distribution Corporation Ltd (DNHPDCL). DNHPDCL was a loss-making government department, but Karnan turned the power sector back into the black.

- His resignation from the prestigious Indian Administrative Service (IAS) on August 21, 2019, was criticized by factions of society; he cited the abrogation of Article 370 and 35-A in J&K as one of the reasons for his resignation. He expressed concern that Johnson & Johnson employees were being denied their basic rights. Another reason for Karnan’s resignation was the lack of freedom of expression he felt during his tenure in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS).
- On November 6, 2019, the Ministry of Interior filed charges against him, accusing him of disobeying orders. Kannan posted the charge sheet on Twitter and said –

- Kannan enjoys traveling, playing badminton, listening to music, and playing drums.
- During the 2018 Kerala floods, he volunteered for flood relief work. He keeps his identity secret to prevent people from making a fuss about his presence. While Kannan was volunteering, the Ernakulam district collector visited the relief camp and recognized him. He posted a photo of Kannan on social media, which quickly went viral. People appreciated and appreciated his efforts.
- After his visit to Kerala, he received a memo from the authorities asking him to explain the reasons behind volunteering in Kerala.
- He also presented a check of INR 1 Crore to the ‘Kerala CM Disaster Relief Fund’ as the official representative of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
- When Kannan was posted to Mizoram, he had the opportunity to meet Prela Gopichand. He encouraged Gopichand to open 30 children’s badminton training centers and a “High Altitude Sports Center of Excellence” in Mizoram.

- Some among the bureaucracy were surprised by Guannan’s resignation. They said he was an outstanding officer and they were shocked that he resigned.
