He received his BA in Economics and Political Philosophy from Pembroke College, Cambridge University, UK, in 1977. While studying at Doon School, Karan Thapar served as editor-in-chief of the school magazine, Doon School Weekly. Callan was vice-president of the Cambridge Union Society while at Pembroke College, Cambridge. While at Cambridge, he famously invited controversial film producer Jorgen Thorson to Cambridge for an interview. The invitation was later rescinded by the Cambridge Union; following a public outcry against the invitation. Callan once wrote a political philosophy column and had many fans at Cambridge University.

Karan Thapar started his career at The Times in Lagos, Nigeria. He worked there until 1981, when he was promoted to chief writer at The Times. In 1982, Callan quit The Times and moved to England to work on weekend television in London, ending his relationship with print media. He worked there for ten years before moving to India in 1991.

In India, Karan joined Hindustan Times Television Group as an executive producer and became an integral part of the channel. Over the next decade, Karan also worked with other channels such as Home TV, Star TV, United Television, etc. before starting his own production company, Infotainment Television, in 2001; producing content for other news channels and media companies. His company produces programs for many channels including the BBC. He joined CNN IBN as an anchor and has interviewed Barack Obama, Narendra Modi, Amitabh Bachchan, Jayalalithaa, Aishwarya Rai and others.

  • Karan claimed in his book that Narendra Modi never gave another interview after he backed out of the interview. Whenever he issued an interview request, his office said he was busy. He claimed that Modi had asked all BJP leaders to boycott Karan. After the BJP won in 2014, he was unable to interview anyone from the BJP.
  • In 2017, Karan Thapar wrote an article about Kulbhushan Jadhav; an Indian who was arrested in Iran and taken to Pakistan, where he was sentenced to death. Later, when the case was heard by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), execution was put on hold pending the final judgment of the case. Thapar’s article was used by Pakistan before the International Court of Justice. This caused outrage among the Indian public, with many journalists condemning the article written by Thapar for casting doubt on the Indian government and RAW.
