Kartik Kumar started running at the age of 14. Aspiring to join the army, he trained at Dr Ambedkar Stadium in Saharanpur to prepare for long-distance running competitions. In 2016, Kartik gained recognition as a national-level athlete by winning a silver medal in 3000m at the Junior National Championships in Kozhikode. He has participated in many competitions including National Federation Cup (CH Muhammed Koya Stadium, Thenhipalam), 26th National Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championship (Birsa Munda Football Stadium, Morabadi, Ranchi), National Open Championship (Stadium Hanamkonda , Warangal), Indian National Games (Gujarat).
In 2022, Kartik Kumar set a personal best time of 1:04:00 at the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon. He also finished second in the TCS World 10K 2022 in Bengaluru with a time of 30 minutes and 6 seconds. In November 2022, Karthik was selected for the National training camp by Reliance Foundation. In 2023, after the Asian Championships in Bangkok, he went to Colorado, USA, to train under the guidance of Scott Simmons. After training, he went directly to China to participate in the 2022 Asian Games.
