Lady Ghika, wife of Regimental Major General Sir Chris Ghika, stood at Mons Barracks in Aldershot, Hants.
Members of the Irish Guards saluted the absent Kate three times – raising their bearskin helmets in the air as a sign of respect.
In a rehearsal video shared on the Prince and Princess of Wales’ Instagram, the royals said: “Happy St Patrick’s Day!”.
“Here’s a sneak peek of the Irish Guards practicing for their annual parade.

“Glory to all who celebrate today!”
The video shows proud members of The Micks saying how the parade unites the regiment of the Home Department.
Lt Conor Meadows added: “When we’re deployed overseas for so much of the year, it’s very special to bring it all together on one day of the year.”
Dressed in a plum-colored dress, Lady Ghika presented the regiment’s mascot, Irish wolfhound Seamus, with a shamrock, as is tradition at the parade.
The 2023 St Patrick’s Day celebration was Kate’s first as an honorary colonel, having taken over the role from Prince William.
She beamed in a turquoise coat and sipped Guinness after paying emotional tribute to William.

She said: “I really couldn’t be more proud to stand before you today.
“It is truly an honor to be your colonel. I am here to listen to you, to support you and to support you in all that you do – it is a responsibility that I do not take lightly.
“I look forward to spending more time with you and your families, seeing your dedication to duty and service in all that you do.
“However, before I finish, I want to thank Colonel William. He has always spoken of his fierce pride for this regiment.
“I know they will all continue to support us in the work we do.”
The Prince of Wales previously said being colonel of the Irish Guards was one of the “great honors of my life”.

The couple was the victim of dishonest conspiracy rumors and embarrassing speculation after the publication of the edited photo.
Friends of the couple told The Sunday Times that the couple were fully aware of the news and outlandish conspiracy theories on social media.
An insider reportedly said the speculation surrounding their marriage is “cruel.”
One of the conspiracy theories being floated was that the couple had split up with Kate not wearing a wedding ring in the doctored photo.
However, Kate doesn’t always wear her engagement ring – the iconic diamond and sapphire ring once worn by Princess Diana.
The Princess of Wales was said to be “very sad” as the cute photo sparked global outrage.
Photoshop saga
Kate is believed to have altered the image three times on the computer before it was posted on social media on Sunday.
A check of the original image revealed that it was taken on a Canon camera with a 50mm lens.
It was edited three times in Adobe Photoshop — once on Friday night and twice on Saturday.
Royal enthusiasts wondered why Kate wasn’t wearing her wedding ring in the Mother’s Day photo and noticed her other hand was blurred.
Others said the sleeve of daughter Charlotte’s cardigan was missing and her skirt was fuzzy.
Some claimed that there appeared to be a strange cut in a nearby molding.
And in the color corrected and lightened version of the image, Kate’s zipper appears to be misaligned.
She apologized on Monday, saying: “Like many amateur photographers, I occasionally experiment with editing.
“I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion caused by the family photo we shared yesterday.”
