After a scandal-filled year in which the company came under fire for its handling of sexual assault allegations, Hockey Canada announced Tuesday that Katherine Henderson has been hired as president and chief executive officer.

Henderson, who has been CEO of Curling Canada for the past seven years, will take up her new role on September 4. Hugh L. Fraser, Hockey Canada Chairman of the Board, said in a press release that Katherine “has the track record and experience to lead Hockey Canada’s continued transformation.”

“With her at the helm, we are confident that we will continue to take the necessary steps to ensure that hockey is a safe and inclusive sport and that Hockey Canada benefits from best-in-class governance,” the statement said. Henderson spearheaded pay equity for the men’s and women’s curling teams at Curling Canada, successfully led campaigns to attract new Canadians to the sport, and oversaw a financial change in the organization’s economic model.

Henderson’s previous role was Senior Vice President of Marketing and Revenue for the Organizing Committee for the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games, where he contributed to records in attendance, ticket sales and television viewership for the Games. Henderson stated: “The potential for hockey is endless.

“I look forward to working with our board and staff, our athletes, our local members and associations, our hockey and corporate partners, and our fans and participants to ensure that all Canadians have a personalized hockey experience that works for them.” said the president of the organization. Henderson takes over from Scott Smith, who left last October after controversy forced the resignation of the governing body’s entire board of directors.

When news broke in May 2022 of an alleged gang-based sexual assault involving members of the 2018 Canadian youth national team and the settlement, Hockey Canada found itself under pressure. Claims against Gamblers Anonymous have not been proven in court, but Canada’s federal government has stopped funding the national governing body for its handling of the alleged sexual assault.

The troubled institution later undertook a full management review and said it would no longer use a fund financed by nationwide player registration fees to deal with sexual assault allegations. After Hockey Canada met the necessary requirements, the Canadian government resumed funding earlier this year.

Hockey Canada must fully uphold the sport free from abuse, implement the recommendations of the independent government review and promise to submit regular reports to the federal government to get their money back.
