Welcome to The Blueprint, where we take apart the celebrity looks we want to wear right now and recreate them, piece by piece.
Sometimes I wonder: How do celebrities do it? And by “it” I mean looking so good on off-duty days. But there are days when celebrities like Katie Holmes make the answer obvious.
Over the weekend in New York, the actress dressed up – or so I thought – to walk the streets. At first I only saw her long raincoat and its beautiful rustic color that somehow seamlessly matched the background of all the autumnal tones around her.
When I looked again, I saw that underneath this jewel of a coat were a few basics: a pair of black tights and what looked like a white t-shirt. She also added a great big bag (a re-style of her bag) and some boots, both in seasonal colors. In other words, the coat was the standout piece that made the whole look what it is.

Cider double breasted tweed and gingham coat
Cider
$68 at Shopcider.com
My wardrobe is probably 80 percent basics and 20 percent dressy pieces; and a bunch of them are long, dramatic t-shirts. What’s cool about coats like this is that it doesn’t matter what I’m wearing underneath. In fact, for this reason, they are best for days when I can’t put together an outfit.
For example, this Cider coat can easily elevate an otherwise casual look. I also think it’s important to choose one that is full length for fall or winter. Jennifer Lopez has already worn practically the same style equation.
Spanx Seamless Leggings
Spanx
$68 in Spanx
While I’m more of a fan of baggy pants, I recognize that even in my closet there is a time and a place for leggings. However, they have to be flawless or I look sporty and like I’m going to an exercise class.
I haven’t tried Spanx tights yet, but I know that Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Garner have worn pairs (albeit different ones) from this brand. I have tried several other pieces of this brand, and the quality is undeniable.
Dream Chelsea low heel ankle boots

$43 $34 on Amazon
High boots are skyrocketing in popularity, but when I have to go somewhere quickly, I don’t want to sit down to adjust them. That’s why shorter boots are more practical — the only thing better might be a slip-on shoe like this pair that comes in sizes 5 to 11. These would be good for a daytime crowd, while something with a small heel would be edgier for nighttime.
Kkxiu big bag
Amazon
$31 on Amazon
I’m having a hard time deciding between this faux leather bag that’s “very soft and supple,” according to one customer, and this Longchamp Le Pliage bag — Holmes is more like the former, and it’s only $31. By the way, I already own two Longchamp bags, so I can personally speak to their durability and practicality, both of which are 10 out of 10.
