Kavita Krishnamurthy was born in New Delhi on Saturday, January 25, 1958 (age 66; as of 2024). Her zodiac sign is Aquarius. She received her BA in Economics from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai.

She belongs to the Tamil Iyer family. Her father’s name is “TS Krishnamurthy” and he is an employee of the Ministry of Education. Her mother’s name is “Kamakshi Krishnamurthy”. She has a younger brother who is classically trained. On November 11, 1999, she married the famous violinist “Dr.” Lakshmi Narayana Subramaniam. “She was his second wife. Her husband had four children with his first wife. Kavita had no children of her own. Her adopted children include two sons – Narayana Subramaniam (a doctor) and Ambi Subramaniam (a violinist) home) and two daughters – “Gingger Shankar” and “Bindu Subramaniam”, both of whom are singers.

Her aunt “Protimma Bhattacharya” insisted that she take music lessons. Kavita was trained by Suruma Basu at Rabindra Sangeet. Later, she began formal training in Hindustani classical music under Balram Puri. During her school days and college, she won many medals at inter-ministerial classical music competitions in New Delhi.
In 1971, while she was still in college, she got the opportunity to sing in the Bengali film “Shriman Prithviraj” with legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar and music composer Hemant Kumar.
In 1976, she was introduced to music director Laxmikant through Jaya Chakravarthy (mother of actress Hema Malini). In 1978, she recorded her first Kannada song “Ondanondu kaaladaga” in the film “Ondanondu Kaladalli”. She achieved her first major success in 1985 with the song “Tumse Milkar Na Jaane Kyon” from the film Pyaar Jhukta Nahin (1985). However, she gained recognition in the industry with two songs, “Hawa Hawaii” and “Karte Hain Hum Pyaar Mr India Se” (both songs were from the film “Mr India”, 1986).
Her song in the film 1942: A Love Story, written by RD Burman, became a hit. She had the opportunity to work with renowned singers and music directors in the industry such as Bappi Lahiri, Anand-Milind, AR Rahman, Ismail Darbar, Himesh Reshammiya, Nadeem-Shravan, Jatin Lalit, Viju Shah, Kishore Kumar and Anu Malik.
She became very popular with her song “Tu cheez badi hai mast mast” from the movie Mohra (1994), starring Raveena Tandon and Akshay Kumar.
In 2011, she lent her voice to the romantic song “Tum Ho” in the movie “Rockstar” starring Ranbir Kapoor and Nargis Fakhri.
