Keegan Bradley News

The PGA Tour event in Connecticut that Keegan Bradley considers his home tournament, the Travelers Championship, saw the New Englander win on Sunday despite a series of late bogeys. After making back-to-back birdies on the 11th and 12th holes, Bradley had a six-shot lead, and not even three straight bogeys, starting with a water putt on the 13th hole, could stop him from winning.

At TPC River Highlands, where he broke the previous tournament record of 258 to beat Zac Blair and Brian Harman by three shots, his 2-under 68 was good for a tournament-record total of 23-under 257.

The tournament was held in Cromwell, Connecticut, where Bradley went as a youth. “This is for all the kids who grew up in New England, had to sit through the winters and watch other people play golf,” Bradley said. “I feel very honored to have won this competition.”

A final dramatic moment occurred on the 18th hole when Bradley’s approach fell under a spectator’s folding canvas chair. But by now, the challenges from his competitors had ceased, and a happy Bradley marched down the green raising his hand to the cheering crowd.

Blair, competing on a major medical exemption after missing two seasons with a shoulder injury, tied for second with an 8-under 62 as the low scores kept coming. Harman posted his second straight 64. Patrick Cantlay, the fourth-ranked golfer in the world, but Bradley came under pressure late when he began to struggle. He made three straight birdies at 13, 14 and 15 to reach 21 under, but bogeyed 16 and 18 to finish with 67, leaving him tied for fourth at 261.

He was joined by the world’s highest-ranked golfer Scottie Scheffler, who shot 65, and Chez Reavie, who was one behind going into the final round but settled for a 71. After losing by one shot to Wyndham Clark in the US Open, Rory McIlroy shot a 64 to tie Denny McCarthy for second at 262. Bradley looked in position to surpass Justin Thomas’ record 72-hole course of 253 at the 2017 Sony Open after making three birdies in his first few six holes.
