Keith Urban Covers Ariana Grande's 'We Can't Be Friends' After Comparing the Song to 'Audible Heroin'

Ariana Grande can count Keith Urban as a fan.

After Urban mentioned Grande’s “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” as his “current obsession” in an interview with PEOPLW earlier this month, the 56-year-old country star posted Eternal sunshine single at a recent concert and shared the video on Instagram on May 14.

“This song is a sonic heroine,” Urban wrote, referencing a quote from his recent interview with PEOPLE in the post’s caption, alongside a clip of him strumming an acoustic guitar while singing the No. 1 hit.

His version of the pop song caught Grande’s attention, as she liked the post and commented, “this is so beautiful 🥹 and thank you tiuuu!”

Earlier this month, Urban blasted “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” while speaking with PEOPLE to promote his recent single, “Go Home WU” featuring Lainey Wilson and an upcoming 10-show Las Vegas residency Vegas, dubbed “High,” at the BleuLive Theater in Fontainebleau.

“I don’t know what’s going on with that song, but I can’t stop playing it. It’s like a sonic heroine. Literally, I have to have another hit,” he said of Grande’s dance-pop song. “I play that thing over and over and over.”

Elsewhere in a recent interview with PEOPLE, Urban said Grande’s song contains “some real heavenly magic,” before declaring, “It’s my absolute current obsession right now.”

“We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” marks Grande’s second single Eternal sunshine. The album is her first album since splitting from ex-husband Dalton Gomez and dating current boyfriend, Ethan Slater.

In an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe ahead of the album’s release in April, Grande talked about what the song represents within the larger narrative of the project.

“I think it fits the concept, in a different way for me than I think it does for most of my friends and most of my family and people who listened,” she said. “They all kind of interpret it a little bit differently, which is what I love about that song, because I think it can apply to any kind of relationship, really — especially when you see the video.”

Released ahead of the album in March, the music video for the single re-enacts the film’s plot Eternal sunshine of a flawless mind. “I think you’ll understand the importance of that, especially since it’s a second single as well,” she teased at the time. “The music video we made for ‘We Can’t Be Friends’ is really an album in a video for me.”
