She recently announced with PEOPLE that she will be publishing her memoir, The third Gilmore girl, this fall through Gallery Books. Bishop began her career on Broadway in 1968 in the musical Golden rainbowand continued to perform in shows like Promises, promises and On the City. Her theatrical breakthrough, however, came with the 1975 musical Refrain.Bishop, then called Carole Bishop, created the role of longtime dancer Sheila Bryant—a character largely based on Bishop’s own life, as explored in the song “At The Ballet.” The role would also earn Bishop a 1975 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.

In one of her most acclaimed film roles, Bishop played Marjorie Housman, the baby’s mother (Jennifer Grey), in the beloved 1987 film. Dirty Dancing.Bishop’s Marjorie, however, almost didn’t make it to the screen. According to Hey! News, the role was originally supposed to be played by Lynne Lipton, but the actress fell ill early on during filming. Bishop, who was slated for a minor part as a resort guest, stepped in, and the rest is screen history.
