Kelly Clarkson Showed Us How to Repurpose Summer Dresses for Colder Months with One Staple Piece

Ever since my summer dresses were, well, gone and packed away, I really miss them. But maybe I don’t have to go on after all.

Kelly Clarkson recently wore what appeared to be a white button-down shirt and sleeveless sweater dress for a day of taping on her talk show, and it totally blew me away. In my eyes, her dress would be a fall or winter “no-no” given the sleeveless situation. But with the addition of a long-sleeve layer, it looked warm and season-appropriate.

Not only did this make me look for similar styles for both, but it also dawned on me: this hack can be used with either short-sleeved dresses, not just the more comfortable celebrity-inspired ones. In other words, my spring and summer styles are also fair, since an extra layer was the only thing they needed to match.

I get a lot of use out of my versatile button-downs, a style of shirt worn by celebrities, but I’ve never worn them under a dress — although that will change. I already have the whole collection in my closet, but I think the puffy sleeves on this one are more feminine than the sharper cut suit, so that might be my next purchase. Plus, when customers call it everything from “gorgeous” to “spinning,” it’s hard to resist.

I plan to use this trick first with dresses from my own closet, but I also found a few similar to Clarkson’s. This one is like Kate Middleton’s bodice dress, and is quite loose around the midsection, so you wouldn’t see the outline of the fastening underneath. I also think the two of them together would be cooler than a dress made from all-over chunky sweater material. Available in sizes S to XXL, the rings cost just under $40.

Another style I may have to splurge on is this plaid beauty, which is very reminiscent of a certain designer brand. Taylor Swift, Jennifer Garner and Clarkson herself have been choosing the seasonal cut lately.
