Kelsey Grammer’s Frasier Gets a Chilly Reception from Grown-Up Son Frederick in Revival Trailer

Time can bring family members together — but in the case of Frasier Crane, it can also drive a wedge between father and son. That seems to be the premise behind the revival of Paramount+ Frasier. In the trailer, which was released Thursday, Kelsey Grammer reprises her role as a bougie psychiatrist who moves from Seattle back to Boston and takes a teaching job to be closer to her grown son Frederick, aka Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott).

At the bar, Frasier raises a glass of beer with his friends, Alan (Nicholas Lyndhurst) and Olivia (Toks Olagundoye), delivering one of his eloquent observations, this time about Boston.

“What is it about the city of Boston that makes me give up fermented grapes?” he wonders aloud. “Sitting here with a cold drink in hand, I feel at one with the hoi polloi.”

“You’re a classic common man,” Alan replies dryly.

When Frasier surprises Freddy outside his apartment, the shrink doesn’t quite get the warm welcome he’d hoped for. “Daddy! You’re at my door! Unannounced!” Freddy says after the unexpected greeting.

“Now there’s a shorter way to say it,” Frasier replies. “Surprise!” Returning to his friends at the bar, Frasier is confused by Freddy’s response and what he is doing with his life now. “What’s going on with your son?” Olivia asks. “I wish I knew. He’s got a girlfriend I’ve never even heard of,” Frasier complains. “When I told him I wanted to spend more time with him, I said ‘No’.”

Kelsey Grammer shares the secrets behind the ‘Frasier’ revival — and why David Hyde Pierce isn’t coming back

After Frasier notes that he misses his son and “won’t take no for an answer, so I’m going to take a job and find a place to live,” Freddy explains to his roommate Eve (Jess Salgueiro) what his dad can be like — with a loud, frustrated ” Ugh!”

Case in point: when Freddy visits Frasier’s immaculately decorated home in Boston, he moves to sit on the couch, which excites his father because those expensive pillows are by Christian Lacroix.

“So we can’t sit on the couch?” Freddy points out, as Frasier notes, “Not in jeans.”

The trailer ends with his son, Alan and Olivia sitting at the bar and Eve ready to serve drinks.

“I’m spending time with my colleagues and friends today and for the first time I can tell that Frasier Crane doesn’t want anything,” beams Frasier.

“Aw, that’s a shame,” replies Eve. “I had someone I wanted to hook you up with.”

“I can be ready in 5 minutes,” he replies.

Paramount+ Frasier the revival comes nearly 30 years after the premiere of the original 1993 sitcom, which was a spin-off of the popular sitcom Cheers.

In addition to Grammer as the title character, the Seattle-based series also stars Jane Leeves as Daphne, David Hyde Pierce as Frasier’s brother Niles, Peri Gilpin as Roz, John Mahoney as Frasier’s father Martin, and Moose as the lovable spiky-haired Jack Russell terrier Eddie.

Bebe Neuwirth, who played Frasier’s then-wife Dr. Lilith Sternin on Cheers, reprized her role several times in the original Frasier, too. (Frasier and Lilith divorced sometime between moving from Boston to Seattle.)

For Frasier reboot, many of the original lineup will not return. Mahoney died at age 77 in 2018, and Grammer said Pierce “wasn’t really interested” in playing Niles again. However, Gilpin and Neuwirth are expected to appear on the show as guest stars.

Lilith, for her part, will reconnect with Frasier on Freddy’s birthday, according to Deadline — an icy reunion that promises to be a “Lilith and Frasier showdown for the ages.”
