The Houston Astros selected Ken Caminiti in the third round of the 1984 amateur draft. In 1985, he made his professional baseball debut with the Osceola Astros of the Single-A Florida State League. After that, he continued to play for another 15 seasons. He also played third base for the Puerto Rican Indios de Mayagüez in the Puerto Rico Winter League.
