Schools and colleges in Kerala Kozhikode will remain closed
Kerala Nipah Virus: According to media reports, the state government has announced that all educational institutes in Kozhikode will remain closed till September 24, 2023 due to the outbreak of Nipah virus. Educational institutes include schools, vocational colleges and teaching centers. In the meantime, online classes will be held throughout the week.
Recently, all the government and private schools and colleges in the reservation zones postponed the examinations for the literacy mission in Kozhikode that was going on at that time. After one more case of Nipah virus was confirmed on Friday, bringing the total number of cases to six, the announcement of closure of schools and colleges was announced.
Kerala Nipah virus containment zones in Kozhikode
The Kozhikode administration has announced that seven village panchayats including Atanchery, Maruthonkara, Tiruvallur, Kuttiyadi, Kayakkodi, Villyapalli and Kavilumpara are containment zones. Only basic services are allowed to work in these areas from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Earlier, the National Institute of Virology, Pune confirmed Nipah virus infection in Kozhikode.
List of Nipah infected contacts in Kerala
The Minister of Health, Veena George, reported on Friday that there are 1,080 people on the list of infected contacts, while 130 of them have been newly added to the list. Of all that, 327 are health workers. A total of 29 people in other districts are on the contact list for the Nipah virus. Among them, 22 are from Malappuram, one from Wayanad and three each from Kannur and Thrissur. The health minister further informed that the number of people on the contact list is likely to increase as the person who died on August 30 tested positive, making her the index case of Nipha in the district.
Hospitals in Kerala will form a medical board
All hospitals treating Nipah virus cases should form a medical committee to meet twice a day. They should submit a report to the health department. The district collector has issued orders in this regard based on the state’s communicable disease control protocols. This is the fourth time that the virus infection has been confirmed in the state. It was unveiled in Kozhikode in 2018 and 2021 and in Ernakulam in 2019.
