Kevin Costner Reminds People in Relationships to Say ‘One Thing’ to Each Other: ‘You’re Important’

Kevin Costner offers his fans the “smallest” life advice.

On Friday, September 20, the Oscar winner played a few songs with his band Modern West at the star-studded One805Live! benefit concert at his residence in Carpinteria, Calif., when he featured one song with a powerful message of encouragement.

Before performing “I Can’t Do This Without You,” the 69-year-old Yellowstone star told fans in attendance that when they’re in relationships, people “sometimes” forget to say just “one thing.”

“The person on our right, you know, the one who guides us through everything, your sweetheart, your wife, whatever it is,” Costner said. “But sometimes, you know, we see all kinds of things and we just forget to say one thing: You matter.”

Costner encouraged his audience to “let them know,” before adding that “in life, sometimes it’s just the smallest thing.”

“What’s so fucking hard about going, you know, ‘You’re important, you’ve been important for a long time,'” he said. “Sometimes you have to search and that’s why this song is about that.”

The charity event also featured performances from Pink, Kenny Loggins, Richard Marx and more – with additional attendees including Prince Harry, Cameron Diaz and her husband Benji Madden, Zoe Saldaña, Jeff Bridges, Rob Lowe and Sheryl Lowe.

Modern West’s set also included a rendition of “Chasing the Wind” as well as a cover of The Turtles’ 1967 classic “Happy Together”.

Costner also hasn’t been shy lately about offering some life lessons to his 17-year-old son Cayden. Earlier this month, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 the star spoke with Hollywood Authentic about making the film with his son, which he described as “the perfect experience.”

“He saw me struggle during this movie. He’s known I’ve been talking about it my whole life,” Costner, a father of seven, said of Cayden. “And then to see me not let go of the opportunity and the hope of that, and actually go out and make two of them — he could see the culmination of that.”

“It’s weird when you look at your dad, I mean, and suddenly you see this movie playing, and people standing and clapping for it,” he added. “I think, maybe, he saw something in the fact that you don’t let go of sleep and that you keep pushing.”

Costner shares Cayden, 17, Hayes, 15, and Grace, 14, with his now estranged wife, designer Christine Baumgartner. He is also the father of Annie (40), Lily (37) and Joe (36), who he shares with ex-wife Cindy Silva, as well as son Liam (26), who he shares with ex-partner Bridget Rooney.
