Mohammed Zahur “Khayyam” Hashmi, also known as “Khayyam”, is a famous Indian music composer. He composed music for films such as Kabhi Kabhie (1976), Trishul (1978), Dard (1981), Dil-E-Nadan (1982) and Umrao Jaan (1981).

Mohammed Zahur “Khayyam” Hashmi was born on Friday, February 18, 1927, in Lakhun, Nawanshahr district, Punjab, British India. His original name was Sa ‘aadat Hussain” (died at the age of 92). His zodiac sign is Aquarius. In his early teens he left home to study music but had to return to complete his studies. Khayyam ran to his uncle’s house in Delhi to become an actor. His uncle enrolled him in a school, but when he saw his passion for movies, he decided that he should study music. He was trained under Pandit Amar Nath. He then traveled to Lahore where he met the famous Punjabi music composer Baba Chishti, from whom he later learned music.

At the age of 17, Khayyam went to Lahore and started working as an assistant to Baba Chishti. Talking about this, Khayyam said –

He assisted him for six months before returning to Ludhiana in 1943. After serving briefly during World War II, he moved to Bombay (now Bombay) to begin his film career. Talking about the reasons for joining the army, Khayyam said——

He made his debut as Sharmaji of the composer duo Sharmaji-Varmaji in 1948 in the film Heer Ranjha.

One of his earliest successes was the song “Akele Mein Wo Ghabrate to Honge” from the film “Biwi (1950)”; sung by Mohammed Rafi. He adopted “Khayyam” as his screen name in the film Foot Path (1953).

After appearing in several films, he gained recognition through the film Phir Subha Hogi (1958), whose songs were composed by Sahir Ludhianvi and sung by Mukesh and Asha Bhosle.
