Ki Tay Davidson news

I’tay Davidson, a member of the AU Class of 2014 and a disability justice advocate, died Dec. 2 in his sleep, according to a Facebook post from his family. Davidson’s friend and College of Arts and Sciences colleague Ryan Durgin remembered his colleague for his creativity and empathy.

Durgin wrote in an email that “Ki’tay is the most honest person I’ve ever met.” He was a visionary who put extreme love first. Durgin also spoke about Davidson’s love of activism and making good change.

According to Durgin, “he was a true champion for change, and his legacy inspired and ignited the flame of change in many people who will continue his fight for justice.”

Davidson worked to raise awareness of disability rights while at AU. She was the Director of Autism Awareness and Community Outreach for the Coalition for Disability Rights. According to an article on AU’s campus life website, she has also given presentations on disability advocacy at high schools and other universities in the region.

On July 25, 2013, the White House recognized Davidson for his commitment to social justice by designating him an Advocate for Change for his disability advocacy efforts, as previously reported by The Eagle. Davidson discussed the fight for disability rights at the White House.

In his White House speech, Davidson said: “The injustices in our society are institutional, and it is easy to become complacent, jaded, or empowered; but our community’s ability to disrupt the dominant narrative through relentless advocacy is incredible.”

In his speech he encouraged even those who are not considered charismatic leaders to become champions.

AU alumni praised Davidson for his motivational speeches and the various ways he impacted their lives in the comments section of his family’s Facebook post. A former student created a Google form so that other classmates could contribute their memories of Davidson.

Davidson joined the Goldhirsh Foundation in Los Angeles as the Social Innovation Coordinator after graduating from American University. According to its website, the Foundation provides financial support to groups like City Year, which focuses on bringing about social change in the region through education reform.
