In the late 1980s, Potter joined the Downtown Brooklyn Police Department as a patrol officer to begin his law enforcement career. She rose through the ranks over the next three decades, working as a union commissioner, community police officer, and field training officer. She was one of the top officers in the department after being promoted to sergeant in 2007.
Throughout his career, Potter has received a number of honors and recognitions for his contributions. She was recognized in 2006 for helping to capture a criminal who was the subject of a high-speed chase. She was one of several police officers who received commendations in 2017 for her actions after a shooting at a nearby nightclub.
Daunte Wright was fatally shot by Potter on April 11, 2021 in Brooklyn Centre, Minnesota, during a routine traffic stop. Police say Potter intended to use a taser but accidentally drew a gun and fired a single round, hitting Wright in the chest. Wright subsequently sped off in his car, but crashed a short time later and died there from his injuries.
Potter was charged with second-degree manslaughter after the shooting, which led to her resigning from her job at the Brooklyn Center police station. Her trial should begin in the next few months.
