Andrew has turned down other homes on offer and is relying on his “cast iron lease”, which includes a condition that the dilapidated £30million cottage in Windsor Great Park is kept in good repair.

But sources believe Charles will force Andy to leave.

He could even cut the £4m a year he pays to stay afloat.

An insider said: “It makes sense for Royal Lodge to return to the Crown Estates, who can pay for much-needed repairs and renovations.

“Then it could be rented out to make money for them, the king’s coffers and the state, rather than being a drain on everyone’s resources.”

A property expert said: “A rent of £1million a year is not incredible for a house of that size with incredible royal connections.”

The king’s spokesman declined to comment.
