Kotwal Ramachandra was an Indian gangster who dominated Bangalore’s underworld in the 1970s and 1980s. He was murdered by his rivals on March 22, 1986, in a farmhouse near Allalasandra in Tumkur.

The transformation from sailor to gangster
Kotwal started his career as a sailor in the Indian Navy. However, he later fled the unit and was declared a deserter. While he was in the village, some politicians approached him to assist them in various political campaigns, Kotwal agreed and he was then hired as the driver-cum-bodyguard of the then Chief Minister of Karnataka D. Devaraj Urs. Kotwal once threatened former Karnataka chief minister Ramakrishna Hegde with a knife during an open house. The incident was reported by many media outlets and the photos went viral. Thereafter he became involved in various criminal activities. In the 1970s, he became one of Bangalore’s top gangsters. He once threatened the chief minister’s daughter after her father ordered the arrest of Kotwal. Kotwal had the political support to believe he would never be arrested. Earlier, Kotwal formed an alliance with a gangster named Jayaraj, but out of greed for power, they became rivals. Kotwal used to carry out criminal activities in north and south Bengaluru, while Jayaraj was restricted to central Bengaluru. Later, Jayaraj was arrested for assaulting a man named Thigallarapete Gopi inside a court, for which he was sentenced to 10 years in prison. This helped Kotwal gain power in Jayaraj district and start carrying out criminal activities in central Bangalore. When Jayaraj was jailed, Kotwal and another gangster Petro Kumar took control of his (Jayaraj’s) area. Later, Jayaraj hired four goons with the help of a gangster named Agni Sridhar to kill Kotwal.

On March 22, 1986, Kotwal’s rival Jayaraj, along with several other gangsters, murdered Kotwal in a farmhouse near Allalasandra, Tumkur, Bangalore. Kotwal). They then dumped Kotwal’s bones in the Bay of Bengal and kept a dog’s bones at the place where he was murdered to confuse the police during the investigation. In an interview, underworld gangster Sitaram Shetty said of Kotwal’s murder:
we attacked kotwal [Ramachandra] Hit him on the head with a machete. Bachchan delivered blows to the neck and head. Sridhar struck with nunchucks. Kotwal died without offering any resistance. “

- After leaving the Indian Navy, he opened a shop in his village in Shimoga.
- A Kannada film titled “Aa Dinagalu” was released in 2007, which chronicled the rise and murder of Kotwal Ramachandra.
