Kristin Hannah Reveals She and Her Mother Started Writing a Book the Day Her Mom Died

Kristin Hannah opens about one of the last moments she shared with her mother before her death in 1980.

Conversations Today Host Jenna Bush Hager for her Open book with Jenn Podcast on Thursday, March 20, Night connection The author, 64, shared that her mother always had a “premonition” that she would become the author – so much that she asked Hannah to write a story with her, long before she became a published writer.

“This was the last, like, three months of her life. She was in the hospital,” Hannah recounted, talking about her mother’s breast cancer travel. “And I was young, you know, I was in my third year of law school.”

At the time, Hannah was only 23 years old and her mother faced the disease while the author went through the Faculty of Law at Puget Sound University in Washington. “So every day after law school I would go to the library and stop in piles and read and get information,” Hannah continued. “And I am more and more in those days, because we decided to write – well, she decided – we will write a historic romance.”

Although Hannah joked that there were many more fans of horror, the historic romance was her mother’s favorite genre. “That’s how we developed this plot, and we just talked and created. “I wrote this book that was set up in my hometown of these two girls who went to college and earned a diploma I did, and one of them gets breast cancer,” Hannah recalled. “And I felt [my mom] With me all the time, and I didn’t realize that after I didn’t finish the novel that I started at the exact time she was when she was diagnosed, and I ended up at exactly at the time she died. “” I felt like I got to know her a little better, but somehow, I suppose, knew my place in her daughter and mother. ”
