Kuldeep Manak is an Indian folk singer known as “Kaliyan da Baadshah” in Punjab. He is a master of an instrument called Tumbi. In 1976, he became the first Punjabi artist to record an LP (long play) with HMV. During his duet days, Kuldeep Manak preferred to sing solo on stage and gave many hit performances during his career. He died in Ludhiana in November 2011 due to complications from pneumonia.

Neha Khan (also known as Neha Singh) is the father of Kuldeep Manak, who himself used to do kirtans and sing rags. Kuldeep Manak lost his father when he was very young. His mother, Bachan Kaur, died on June 13, 1979. He has two brothers, Siddqui, a devout singer, and Rafiq, a tantric devotee who was booked in a sexual harassment case in 2003. To pursue his singing career, Kuldeep Manak moved to Ludhiana from Bathinda and started singing with Harcharan Grewal and Surinder Seema. At the age of 17, he had his first opportunity to record a duet with the famous singer Surinder Seema, which was a huge success. “Maa Mirze di Boldi” is the first folk song sung by Kuldeep Manak. In 1973, he recorded his first EP “Punjab Dian Lok Gathawan” under HMV. He collaborated with Amarjot Kaur for nearly four years and recorded an LP with her in 1983; the songs “Ik Mai Hova Ik Tu Hove” and “Lae Gya Meri Jind Kadh Ke” were the most popular.

Later, in 1974, he recorded an album titled Allah Bismillah Teri Jugni which was very popular at that time. His famous Kali “Tere Tille Ton” was part of his first LP “Ik Tara” recorded with HMV.

Kuldeep Manak and his nephew started performing on stage while they were in school. He was influenced by Dhadis (a type of musical trio or quartet) and sang in high notes. During his career, he performed on many stages in India and abroad. He said in an interview that the largest gathering of 12 to 13 lakh people he had ever seen took place in his village Jalal and he was flown on stage along with DGP KPS Gill. He said that whenever he performs at Gadri Babe de Mela, there is always a big crowd.

Kuldeep Manak has sung many hit songs for many Punjabi movies such as “Sathon Nae Majhin Chaar Hundian” in the movie Saidan Jogi (1979) and “Yaaran Da Truck Balliye” in the movie Lambardaarni (1980). In 1981, he produced a Punjabi film, Balbiro Bhabi; he also acted in this film, but after this film, he decided not to act in any films.He said in an interview

In 1996, Kuldeep Manak contested the Bathinda Lok Sabha elections as an independent MP. He received 23,090 votes but lost the election.

Kuldeep Manak passed away on Wednesday, November 30, 2011, at a local DMC hospital in Ludhiana. He was chronically ill and suffered complications from pneumonia in his final days. The last rites were performed on December 2, 2011, in his birthplace, Jalal village.
