Kyle Richards and Alexia Umansky on Mother-Daughter Skin Care and 3 A.M. Beauty Routines (Exclusive)

Kyle Richards and Alexia Umansky are making their mark in the beauty space.

The The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills The 55-year-old star and her 28-year-old daughter are the new faces of Peter Thomas Roth. Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE about their partnership with the legendary skincare brand, the two talk about what it was like shooting their first campaign together and their skin journeys, which have the cliché “mom knows best” written all over them.

“She taught me everything I know,” says Alexia, who has been asking her mom for advice “forever.”

Richards’ beauty philosophy is also generational. “My mom was really into skincare, so I grew up with it,” recalls the late Kathleen Richards, adding that being part of an “all-female family” influenced her rituals.

So when she became the mother of a girl, she “of course” passed on the importance of routine to her children. “For me, for my skin to be fine, then [I was] fine with everything else.”

A mother and daughter’s shared love of skincare is at the heart of Peter Thomas Roth’s new digital campaign for Sephora, which highlights the Hyaluronic Acid-based Water Drench Hyaluronic Cloud Cream Moisturizer.

In the ad, Richards and Umansky flaunt the fan-favorite face cream — but not without the charm and humor of reality TV.

The spot opens with Richards in full glam style and ends with her drenched in water, thanks to Umansky who, in a “pretty rebellious” move, dunks her mom to snap her out of her reverie fueled by the luxurious feel of a humidifier cloud.

Richards tells PEOPLE that she was more than happy to rely on scripted antics. “It was so much fun filming that day, just to be with Alexia. She’s not an actress by any means, but she just went in and did her thing. She is definitely the friendliest of my four daughters [Richards shares Alexia, Portia, 16, and Sophia, 24, with Mauricio Umansky and Farrah, 35, with ex Guraish Aldjufrie].”

The Water Drench collection has so much more, including multiple moisturizers, serums, a gel cleanser, gel mask, body cream, eye patches, and sunscreens (available in tinted and non-tinted). The line gives the skin a great glow by solving dullness, dryness and texture.

Another of Richards’ favorites for a youthful complexion is the $58 Hyaluronic Cloud Rich Barrier Moisturizer, a skin plumping cream that increases firmness and elasticity and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

“People can say, ‘Oh, age, age gracefully.’ No, I will fight every step of the way. I admit it – I want to look as young as possible,” she says.

And when she says she’s committed to taking care of her skin, she means it. “I remember my mom would wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and in the middle of the night she would put cream on herself and go back to bed. So sometimes even if it’s like, 3 in the morning, if I’m going to the bathroom, I’ll wash my hands and put them on [cream] back on your face and go back to sleep.”

She also likes that moisturizers can be worn with makeup throughout the day. “A lot of times you’ll find a good cream that you can’t put under makeup because it pills. So I love that I can have exactly what I need on my face and have it look plump and… dewy,” Umansky quips.

Umansky loves his mom in many ways (including the meticulous way he grooms his eyebrows before bed). And when asked what makes her the most confident, it’s clear that Richards has taught her one of the most valuable lessons in life: to do things her own way.

“I always feel my best when I’m not wearing makeup,” says Umansky. “I think it has to do with the fact that I struggled so much with my skin when I was younger. Now that I’ve come this far, I love my natural face and I feel like it’s a proud decision to go out every day wearing nothing.”

On what makes him feel good in his own skin, Richards says, “For me, it’s a healthy feeling. When I feel healthy and take care of my body, I feel better about myself,” she says. “Taking care of myself from the inside out makes me the most confident.”
