Kyle Richards and Mauricio Umansky Joke About What They’re ‘Getting in the Divorce’ on Buying Beverly Hills

THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR BUYING BEVERLY HILLS SEASON 2.

Kyle Richards and Mauricio Umansky’s divorce creates a lot of tension in the second season Buying Beverly Hills — but the couple also manages to take their situation lightly at times.

After news of their split becomes public during a family trip to Aspen, Richards, 55, and Umansky, 53, discuss how to handle the necessary conversation they’ll have with their children while making dinner together. Although it’s a difficult subject and sometimes tense, the couple eventually tackles it with a bit of humor.

When Richards puts on the red apron, Umansky jokes that it’s his. “I’ll get that in the divorce,” he tells his wife of 27 years. “That’s my apron. You can borrow it for now.”

“You can have it,” he jokes back, “That’s all you get.”

The exchange leads to an even more difficult scene for the family, as they sit down with their four daughters: Alexia Umansky, 27, Sophia Umansky, 24, Portia Umansky, 16, and Farrah Brittany (née Aldjufrie), 35, to address the news.

“We should talk about it now that we’re all here,” Richards says. “Because it happened out of the blue, it blindsided us all. I know it was a lot.”

She continues: “I’m really sorry about that because it’s not fair to you. I’m just used to it.”

Sophia tells her parents: “This time it was different because everyone was reaching out. My phone was blowing up with people calling me. I opened up Instagram and it was everywhere. It was definitely hard to feel like maybe I didn’t know the whole story ”

“We’ve had a tough year. It’s work,” Richards admits, and Mauricio agrees.

Richards appears teary-eyed as she continues: “It’s hard as a parent trying to find a balance between being honest with you and not sharing too much. Some things are private between [Mauricio and I]. It simply is. So I’m sorry if you think I haven’t shared enough, but that’s why.”

The couple continues to work through their separation throughout the season, though Mauricio admits in scenes near the end of the finale that he hasn’t had a proper conversation with his wife in “two months” and discusses potentially moving out of the family home.

PEOPLE confirmed in July 2023 that the couple had “separated,” but Umansky also told PEOPLE last October that he and Richards were still working on their marriage. “We have a bit of a difficult situation,” he said at the time, adding, “She and I are currently separated, but we’re not throwing in the towel.” We don’t say it just to say it. We’re not actually throwing in the towel yet.”

Mauricio and Richards married in January 1996 after meeting in a nightclub in 1994.

Season 2 of Buying Beverly Hills is now streaming on Netflix.
