Kylie Jenner Says the ‘Biggest Challenge’ of Building Kylie Cosmetics Was ‘Proving People Wrong’ — Including Mom Kris

Kris Jenner had doubts about Kylie Cosmetics.

While I was talking to Jennifer Lawrence for Interview magazine, Kylie Jenner revealed that her mom wasn’t initially sold on the Kylie Lip Kit — the beauty business’ first product, which, as Lawrence put it, “shut down the entire internet” in 2015.

“You were a young teenager experimenting with your own makeup. What was the biggest challenge to bring that into real life?” the No anger asked the 33-year-old star, adding that “a lot of people think that influence makes everything easier, but a lot of times it can obviously be a hindrance.”

The 26-year-old beauty mogul agreed, telling the actress, “Proving people wrong was a challenge, but so was building it from the ground up.”

“It was me and my mom and we never did a makeup line,” she continued. “We didn’t know where to start. We had no one to help us. And my mom thought I’d be stuck with lip kits in the garage for the rest of my life.”

The reality star recalled ordering a “minimum” of 5,000 lip kits – liquid lipstick and lip liner – in three colors (Dolce K, Candy K and True Brown) and said Kris, 68, was worried she might be left with the products are long past their launch date.

“She said, ‘You better be ready, Kylie, because you might have a lot of lip kits in your garage for the rest of your life, so you better love these colors,'” she recalled.

Luckily for Kris – and Kylie – the lip kits sold out almost immediately – and “broke” the internet in the process.

“And then it broke in two seconds, and then we were like, ‘Okay, how are we going to do this? How do we make it faster and better?’” Kylie recalled.

After the success of the lip kit, she and Kris “drove all over California” visiting factories, the reality star recalled. “It was difficult to find the best manufacturer. We were a new company, so growing in front of a lot of people was difficult,” she said, adding that “you have no room for error.”

“But it wasn’t a bad thing,” she clarified. “It was so successful and it was the best time of my life.”

The Hunger Games alum also fast-forwarded, asking Kylie what inspired her to start “lip contouring” in the first place — which the actress credits her with bringing “into the mainstream.”

“I think it started because I just wanted big, plump, juicy lips, and I just wanted the illusion of having fuller lips,” she replied. “But no one taught me. When I started doing it, I didn’t really work with make-up artists and stuff like that.”

Elsewhere in the interview, The Kardashians star revealed how she explains her job to her children, Stormi, 5, and Aire, 21 months, who she shares with ex Travis Scott.

“What do you tell them mom does?” Lawrence asked, and Kylie replied, “Mommy’s putting on makeup.”

And Stormi doesn’t just know Kylie Cosmetics – she’s striking.

“Stormi played with my makeup yesterday. She likes to wear red lips sometimes – revealed the reality star. “Just around the house, obviously. And I always like to show her my name on the rose. I said, ‘This is mom’s lipstick. Your mom is really great.’”

According to Kylie – who expanded her empire into the fashion world earlier this year – her mini-me also features pieces from her new clothing line, Khy.

“My son is too young to know what’s going on, but I told Stormi that mom is making clothes now. I have my Khy collection coming out and I’ve made all the mini-versions of all the pieces for her since our first announcement,” she revealed. “I love that she’s involved in everything I do and I always do special things for her.”
