Profession

After graduation, Lalit started practicing wrestling at his uncle’s Akara Lala Ram Viamshala in Delhi’s Rosh Nala area and started participating in national level wrestling competitions in Delhi in the 63 kg and 68 kg categories and Won many medals in national and university competitions in the 90’s game. However, he had to end his wrestling career due to a knee injury. He didn’t want to give up wrestling, so his uncle suggested he get a wrestling coaching certificate. Later, Lalit pursued a wrestling coaching diploma at the National Institute of Sports (NIS) in Patiala. Lalit revealed in an interview that he didn’t want his family’s wrestling legacy to end after his knee injury, so he decided to pursue a career as a wrestling coach. He said,

I dislocated my knees more times than I should have. In the nineties, surgery was a scary word, especially for players because they said it would be career-ending. But my career ended without the sport as my other brothers had excelled in areas outside of sport, so I still had the desire to keep myself connected to the sport and continue the family legacy. It was then that Tauji asked me to get a coaching certificate from the National Institute of Sports (NIS), Patiala. Coaching is the only way I can still stay connected to the love of my life. ”

In 2006, after completing his diploma in wrestling coaching from the National Sports Institute, Lalit started working as a contracted coach with the Uttar Pradesh government in Bulandshahar. Later, he returned to his uncle’s Lala Ram Vyamshala gym in Delhi. After working in his uncle’s gym for a while, he got a coaching job offer from the Delhi government. In 2010, he started working as a wrestling coach at the Delhi Government’s Singhu Sports Centre. In 2012, he was posted to Chhatrasal and worked there for over 12 years. Over the years, he has coached many famous wrestlers such as Olympic silver medalist Ravi Dahiya and Deepak Punia. He also coached World Championship silver medalist Aman Sehrawat, who won a bronze medal at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

  • In an interview, Lalit talked about his daily life while working at Chhatrasal College in Delhi and revealed that his day starts at 5:00 am in winter and 4:30 am in summer. He also said that he worked a five-hour shift in the morning and a five-hour shift in the evening. He said,

    I reach Akara in Chhatrasal at 5 am in winter and 4.30 am in summer, whatever the weather. It was non-negotiable for me, I worked a five hour shift with the wrestlers in the morning and then did my real job until I got back to the office. [wrestling] Another five hours of sleep at three o’clock in the evening. “
