Lana Del Rey Has Songs Ready for Country Album but Doesn't Want It to Be 'Half-Cooked': 'We'll Get There'

Lana Del Rey wants fans to know she’s in no rush for perfection when it comes to releasing her highly anticipated country album, Lasso.

Talking to PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly at the 2024 Instyle Imagemaker Awards held in Los Angeles on Thursday, October 24, the 39-year-old singer offered a sneak peek into where her head is as she approaches the release of her next opus.

“I think all the songs were Americana and I want to wait to see what the musical atmosphere is like,” she says Lasso. “Because I don’t usually feel like I need a break in the creation process, but if there’s a literal energy break that almost feels like a physical break, then I have to wait, and I don’t know why.”

The “Born to Die” singer adds, “I’ll have to see if it’s because of something someone did or if it’s going to change.”

While Del Rey can’t give an exact release date for the project just yet, she teases, “We’ll see. But I love the songs that I have, so I don’t want to turn them into something that’s half-baked, even if it’s super stripped down, I want it to be what it was meant to be be.”

As for fans patiently waiting for the album’s release, all she has to say is, “They can be excited about all the other good things that are happening. We’ll get there. First things first!”

Those looking to catch a glimpse of Americana-heavy Del Rey need look no further than her latest collaborative single: “Tough,” featuring Quavo. Backed by an emotive country-influenced guitar riff that features vocals that talk about everything from “the dirt on a pair of old leather boots” to the “blue collar, red dirt attitude,” the music video features scenes of country roads, farmhouses, and other elements of Americana.

Del Rey previously said NME earlier this year that Lasso will feature songs that have “maybe less to say in terms of any self-revealing things like on Tunnel or Blue flags or Chemtrails over the Country Club,” describing his new songwriting as “more melodic. Maybe more in the style of an American songbook?”

Ultimately, the “Summertime Sadness” singer is aware of the power of country music in today’s industry. “When I gave Jack Antonoff his producer of the year award, I said, ‘Welcome Nashville to Hollywood and Hollywood, welcome to Nashville because the music business has gone, gone country.’ And it fell silent; 5,000 people, dead silence,” she told the newspaper. “Then the next week we had three major artists announcing major country albums.”
