Large Moose Makes Surprise Visit to Mass. Elementary School: ‘This Is Crazy’

A giant moose shocked a Massachusetts town by stopping by a local school.

On Monday, the towering creature strolled through the pantry at Naquag Elementary School in Rutland, Massachusetts. Bonnie Anne Albert, a paraprofessional at the school, caught the incident on camera.

In the video, the moose takes long strides past the school, walking alongside cars lined up to drop off children for the day. The wild animal continues down the boardwalk on the elementary school campus as someone says, “Holy cannoli, that’s crazy,” in response to the sighting. Another person exclaims, “How beautiful!”

Albert can be seen opening a door to get a better angle of the creature as it makes its way through the school grounds. The clip ends with a moose walking past the playground before disappearing further down the path into the trees.

“Seeing it where I work and coming here every day, it was pretty cool,” Albert told local news station WCVB-TV.

Albert added to the newspaper that school staff were preparing to welcome the children to school around 8:35 a.m. when the moose appeared. “My co-workers and I are doing our usual routine of picking up the kids in the morning, and seeing a moose walking down the sidewalk was shocking and so beautiful,” she said.

“We were all looking at each other, like, no way. This is moose. This is crazy,” Albert told WCVB-TV.

The educator noted that the moose even followed the rules of the road, “crossed the crosswalk” and “used the right” lane ahead.

Parents and students in cars coming to school also saw the moose go by. “All the parents, too, in the pick-up line, were sticking their heads out the window and filming it. It was pretty funny,” added Albert.

The rare incident even earned a mention on social media from the police department in Rutland, Massachusetts. “Special visitor this morning on the Naquag Elementary School line! [The] the moose has since left the area,” authorities wrote online alongside a photo of the moose.

The department also relayed a warning to the Mass Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, which asked people to “never attempt to approach or chase a moose.”

“A chase not only stresses the animal, but also increases the risk of the moose being driven into traffic or a group of passers-by,” the police department said. “Wildlife experts recommend that elk find their way out of populated areas and into nearby forested areas.”

The Mass. Department of Fish and Wildlife said on its website that if people see a moose in a densely populated area, they should “leave the moose alone” and “contact the nearest MassWildlife county office or environmental police.”
