‘Lawmen: Bass Reeves’ Trailer Sees David Oyelowo’s Sheriff Executing His Duties by Any Means Necessary

David Oyelowo’s Bass Reeves is committed to honoring his badge.

On Thursday, Paramount+ announced the trailer for Taylor Sheridan’s highly anticipated original series, Attorneys at Law: Bass Reeves.

According to a press release shared with PEOPLE, the western series will follow the untold story of “the most legendary outlaw in the Old West” as he “rises from slavery to law enforcement as the first black U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi.”

Although he arrested “over 3,000 outlaws during his career, the weight of the badge was great.” Reeves even struggled with the “moral and spiritual toll” the job took on his family.

“I, Bass Reeves, do solemnly swear to faithfully discharge my duties as deputy marshal without malice or partiality, so help me God,” Oyelow’s Reeves recites in the trailer as scenes of him fighting outlaws and laughing with his family flash on screen.
