News about Lecresia Campbell
I’ve been working on completing an article on an artist who is, in my opinion, the “total package” and standout singer as Gospel Music Heritage Month comes to a close. Lecresia Campbell was my choice for the latter. I am saddened to learn of the passing of Mrs. Campbell today.
She was a gift to the Body of Christ whose name probably only gospel music fans know. Despite being well received, she received little attention as gospel music became more popular. This last GMH post of the month will be dedicated to her in her honor and with deep sorrow.
It is a personal loss. The thought of Campbell entered my mind a week before the news of his illness. Her voice particularly impressed me as a singer leaning towards classical music. In order to learn some tricks and hear her beautiful voice again, I went to YouTube and played some of her songs one after another.
Other than singing Negro Spirituals, I never really knew what to do with my voice in the gospel industry. For black performers with an operatic tone, spirituals performed on special occasions or in theatrical productions provided a safe environment.
That is, of course, unless her first name is “Lecresia” and her last name is “Campbell”. Her fashion was well received. By putting heartfelt innuendo into the lines, Campbell was doing what I only dared to hope for: creating a very formal vocal presentation acceptable to the religious masses.
Another aspect of his music that kept me interested the day I listened to all of his songs again was his ability to “serve” a song. I came to listen to music. I stayed to take care of the service. As I listened to a rendition of Mrs. Campbell’s “I’m In His Safety,” the tenderness in his voice helped me calm down.
I learned that week that Campbell had had a stroke from a Facebook post. According to reports, she had a follow-up operation that went well and she was due to be released from the hospital tomorrow, September 30. While Campbell posted a statement on Facebook on September 7 announcing that she would be responding to messages from her, fans were hoping for a full recovery.
