Lenny Kravitz Not Calling Unwanted Sexual Encounter as Teen Assault: ‘I Wasn’t Traumatized’

Lenny Kravitz opens up about a sexual encounter he had as a teenager, but denies that what happened to him was an assault.

In an interview with Esquire released Wednesday, the 59-year-old “American Woman” singer talked about topics such as the upcoming release of his first studio album in five years, his upcoming tour and the people he admires.

Roker also reflected on a situation that happened to him when he was younger, which changed the way he looked at relationships later in life.

“It was an experience and a lesson. It doesn’t have to be like that…” Kravitz began when asked about the unwanted sexual act, which he already talked about in his 2020 memoir. Let love rule.

“I’m not saying there aren’t things that deserve to be addressed — maybe someone would say that it should be addressed and it was, whatever, but that’s the time it was,” the “Fly Away” artist said. “I lived and learned. I wasn’t traumatized.”

As he mentioned Esquire, in Kravitz’s book, the Grammy winner is seen explaining that the incident happened while his parents were out of town and he was watched by a family friend. While he was lying in bed, a friend invited by the nanny entered his room, crawled under the covers with him and touched him without permission.

“I was not interested in persuading or coercing women,” he wrote in the book, according to the publication. “I was forced myself and I didn’t like it.”

Kravitz also shared with Esquire that there were times when he was not an honest partner in his romantic relationships. He shared that he hasn’t always had the best luck “being convinced that this is the person for me, always thinking that something else might be better.”

Referring to his former lovers, he added: “I’ve put some people through hard times.”

Kravitz and Lisa Bonet were married in 1987 before divorcing in 1993. The former couple have a daughter, Zoë Kravitz, 34.

“I’ve grown enough. I became stronger. I became more disciplined,” he said. “I became more open to being able to do that. But that was very difficult for me to understand.”

The New Yorker echoed those sentiments in a PEOPLE 2019 exclusive.

“I’m at a place now where I’ve been through so many relationships, and I wasn’t good at it all the time, at all. I’ve had a lot to learn, but I feel like I’m in a place where I’m really ready for it.”
