Lewis Miley News
In the second half of Sunday’s season-ending draw at Chelsea, Miley made his senior Magpies debut. He nearly had an immediate impact as he sent in a 20-yard strike that barely cleared the crossbar. The 17-year-old from Stanley became the newest academy product to advance to the senior ranks this past weekend after being promoted to Newcastle’s first-team group during the past few months.
Elliot Anderson, a Scotland international who had become a regular first-team member this season, was replaced as he entered the pitch at Stamford Bridge. Anderson, 20, has played in League Two with Bristol Rovers on loan from Newcastle, unlike Miley, who hasn’t had that experience.
Given Miley’s sudden promotion to the Premier League stage, it would be surprising if lower-league clubs were not snooping around Miley. However, while Howe recognises the advantages of loaning out young players, he also believes Miley’s development would benefit from regular training sessions with the rest of Newcastle’s first-team group in the first half of the following season.
According to Howe, Elliott was probably a little further along in his development as a result of the loan, but that’s what loans are for: to gain experience, to play games, and to strengthen your resilience.
“I was happy with Elliott (against Chelsea); it was a difficult, physically demanding game for him and it’ll do wonders for him next year. I’d think Lewis is a little bit behind that.
“Since he just turned 17, I don’t want to have high expectations for him, but we do believe in him. I sincerely hope he trains with us regularly in the coming season.
After only five minutes on the pitch, Miley received the ball from Callum Wilson and hammered a shot that hit the crossbar. The young man would have experienced a memorable moment had his effort been successful, and Howe was not surprised to see him come so close to capturing a victory after closely observing him in training over the previous few weeks.
Lewie is a tremendously exciting talent, according to the Magpies’ manager. He ought to be satisfied with how he performed after turning on. He could have won it, but it’s a difficult environment to play in for your first Premier League game. He has a strong sense of finishing, so I wouldn’t have been surprised to see
