Liam Payne’s cause of death may have been a skull fracture he sustained after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina.
In a statement translated from Spanish, Alberto Crescenti (head of SAME, Buenos Aires’ public emergency medical system), told Argentine news channel TN that Payne fell into the hotel’s courtyard and suffered “very serious injuries” during the fall.
“From what the team saw, he fractured the base of the skull,” Crescenti told the news outlet.
He told the statement that SAME was alerted to the incident around 5 pm with “a person who was in the inner courtyard of the CasaSur Hotel”. He said when they arrived they found the man – later identified as the One Direction singer – dead. “He had non-life threatening injuries as a result of the fall,” Crescenti continued to TN, adding, “There was no way to do anything.”

He said Payne, who was 31 years old, fell from the third floor onto the interior terrace of the hotel where he was staying, and noted that the fall distance could have been between 13-14 meters (or roughly between 43-45 feet).
Crescenti said an autopsy is being performed to determine Payne’s official cause of death and that investigators are still trying to figure out the details of what happened leading up to his death.
In a transcript of a 911 call from the CasaSur Palermo hotel to 911, obtained by NBC News, a person informed them of a “guest” at the hotel who they assumed was “under the influence of alcohol and drugs” and was damaging a hotel room.

“We’ve got a guest who’s high on drugs and alcohol and… So when he’s conscious, he’s trashing the whole room. Well, we need to send someone over, please,” the caller said.
In further audio obtained by Telemundo and NBC News, the caller said, “There’s a guest in a room that has a balcony and, well, we’re a little afraid that he might do something life-threatening,” adding that the guest had been in the hotel two to three days.

Liam Payne was ‘extremely overwhelmed’ by legal issues with ex Maya Henry before death at 31 (Exclusive)
Policía Federal Argentina confirmed to PEOPLE on Wednesday, Oct. 16, that Payne was pronounced dead after falling several stories at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires and that an investigation is currently underway to determine the circumstances of his death.
Payne has been in Argentina since at least the beginning of this month, when he attended his former One Direction bandmate Niall Horan’s concert at the Movistar Arena in Buenos Aires on October 2 with his girlfriend Kate Cassidy.
The singer is survived by his 7-year-old son Bear Grey, whom he shares with former Girls Aloud singer Cheryl.
