He told fans he has been told by medics to “rest and recover” – meaning he will not perform his gig dates in South America.

In a heartfelt video message, downcast Liam apologised to fans – and promised to put on an “even bigger and better show” in future.

Laim is thought to be recovering in his home in the South East with girlfriend Kate Cassidy, who recently returned from a trip home to America.

The news comes with Liam due to celebrate his 30th birthday on Tuesday.

Liam said: “It’s with a heavy heart I have to tell you that we have no other choice but to postpone my upcoming tour of South America.

“Over the past week I’ve been in hospital with a serious kidney infection, it’s something I wouldn’t wish on anyone, and doctors orders are that I now need to rest and recover.

“I was beyond excited to come play for you guys. To all of you who have bought tickets: I’m so sorry.

“We’re working to re-schedule the tour as soon as we possibly can, but for now we will be refunding the tickets – so please look out for updates from your point of purchase.

“Thanks as always for the love and support, and look forward to seeing you soon.”

The tour of South and Central America was going to serve as a soft launch ahead of his second album.

Insiders tell me Liam had been excited to finally play a series of live solo shows — after publicly struggling since ONE DIRECTION split in 2016.

Speaking before being struck by the kidney infection, Liam said: “To be honest with you, when I became solo, I didn’t rehearse very much so we’ve rehearsed — we’re rehearsing a lot for these shows.

“Hopefully it’ll be a much better put-together show, I wanna put some good videos in the background, some good things about me for people to learn about what I’ve been doing for the last two years.

“I’m just excited to show this new side of myself.”

Liam’s career started off on The X Factor when he was put into a boyband named One Direction by Simon Cowell in 2010.

The band broke up six years later, as the boys attempted to launch their own solo careers.

Liam released his first album LP1 in 2019.

He shares a son called Bear with his ex Cheryl, who was a judge at the time he was on The X Factor.

Liam, who marks six months of being sober this week, has credited Cheryl with helping him get his life back on track.

It was revealed last month that Liam secretly spent 100 days in a wellness clinic in the US last year after hitting rock bottom.

The 29-year-old said he no longer recognised himself after lashing out at everyone around him as he struggled to navigate life post-One Direction.

During his time in the Louisiana centre, which specialises in helping people deal with past trauma, he was cut off from the outside world after handing in his phone.

And he found solace in art and poetry.

Liam added it would be the first time on the road he has not been leaning on booze for support.

He said: “It’s the first time in a long time that I’ve really been sober throughout the shows because I was kinda leaning on alcohol quite a lot of the time.

“I’m excited to experience it through a whole new lens, really.

“I’m just so happy that a lot of these fans have kinda stuck by me through, you know, harder times and stuff.

“Yeah, it’s gonna be really, really fun.”
