Profession
Liju Krishna is the founder and artistic director of Saga Entertainment, a Thrissur-based cultural collective that he founded in 2013 while studying at the Institute of Drama and Fine Arts. The group consists of young students of theater arts with the aim of creating innovative content in theater and cinema in Kerala. He began his journey as a writer and director with the independent short film “On Camera” (2012). The film went on to win numerous awards at the National Short Film and Documentary Festival (2013).
In 2014, Liju came into the limelight for designing, writing and directing the Malayalam drama “The Last Day”. Produced by Saga Entertainment and Sunny Wayne Productions, the show premiered at JT Pac in Tripunithura, Kochi. The play showcases the memories of a dying man and depicts the traditions and life of North Kerala from a contemporary perspective. The lack of intimate theatrical spaces such as black boxes makes it difficult to convincingly stage theater performances in Kerala. Despite the lack of infrastructure, the 75-minute drama was screened at several film festivals, including the 8th Theater Olympiad 2018 and the Independent Best Film Festival (Ibestff). The show was nominated in six categories and won two awards: Best Actor and Best Designer at the 2014 Mahindra Excellence in Theater Awards (META).
In June 2017, he released another independent Malayalam short film “Ima”, produced by Saga Entertainment and starring veteran actor Pratap Pothen. This critically acclaimed short film tells the story of a middle-aged couple, Madhavan and Radhu.
Liju Krishna made her Bollywood directorial debut in 2022 with the political drama Padavettu, starring Malayalam actor Nivin Pauly. He is also the screenwriter of the film. In 2022, when “Padavettu” was still in post-production, Liju was detained by the police on suspicion of rape.
