Lil Wayne Found Andre 3000’s Quote that Rapping Feels ‘Inauthentic’ at Age 48 ‘Depressing’

André 3000’s comments about age and rapping recently cut Lil Wayne deep.

After the Outkast alum, 48, said, “Sometimes it feels inauthentic to rap,” Lil Wayne shared on his Young Money Radio show with Tyga that Andrea 3000’s comments made him a little sad.

“I read a depressing quote or two from someone I really respect in hip-hop and music, period,” Wayne (born Dwayne Michael Carter Jr.), 41, shared with Tyga, 34.

“They asked them: ‘Why don’t you do music?’ and they said, ‘Man, what am I going to talk about? I’m in my 40s, like, what am I going to talk about? What do you want to know about being 40 years old and the life I live at this age? What should I talk about?’”

After Wayne offered a brief summary of the unnamed artist’s interview, he continued, “I feel like I have a lot to talk about—”

Tyga (born Micheal Ray Stevenson) quickly chimed in, adding, “I feel like you gotta stay in it. You have to stay in it. I feel like you can’t be too far.”

Wayne agreed and shared that he believes Andrea 3000’s comments could become the “ruining” element of his career. The “Mrs. Officer” rapper explained that when he puts “lyrics and characteristics” together, there’s a certain version of himself that “fires up,” even though sometimes he doesn’t know “what the hell is going on” through the song.

“I don’t know the guy, I just know he always comes through,” Wayne added.

The conversation between the two rappers follows an interview with Andre 3000 (né André Lauren Benjamin) for GQMan of the Year series, where he explained why rapping seems inauthentic to him.

“I have nothing to talk about in that way. I am 48 years old,” he revealed. “And I don’t want to say that age dictates what you rap about, but it kind of does.”

“Ms. Jackson” rapper told the paper that it’s not for lack of effort that he hasn’t released solo raps since Outkast broke up. That’s because he’s been around — after debuting with collaborator Big Boi in Atlanta in the ’90s.

The hitmaker, who last released a full-length album with Outkast in 2006, also clarified how hard he tried to release rap music. “I’ve worked with some of the newest, freshest, youngest and old school producers. I get beat up all the time. I try to write all the time,” “Hey Ya!” the artist shared.

On November 17 – and 17 years later – the musician announced New Blue Sona new solo album of wind music.
