Lily-Rose Depp defends The Idol amid major controversy and missing finale

Idol star Lily-Rose Depp has publicly defended her HBO series The Idol, after the series received a lot of criticism from critics and viewers for being deemed too offensive.

The series, which was originally supposed to be six episodes long before Sam Levinson rewrote it to just five, stars Jocelyn, the daughter of Johnny Depp, a troubled pop star who has a crush on a cult leader played by The Weeknd.

Speaking to Vanity Fair about the “provocative” performance, 24-year-old Lily-Rose explained: “We knew we were doing something provocative and we didn’t shy away from it. That’s what I knew I wanted. I’ve never been interested in making something purist. If this show isn’t for everyone, that’s okay – I think the best art is [polarizing].”

Her co-star Troye Sivan added, “Honestly, I’ve never felt more respected and safer on set. And I think the trust we’ve all built together, you and me [Sivan plays Xander]And [creator Sam Levinson] and me, and Abel and me, that alone can make a really safe set. So in terms of nudity and the reckless nature of the role, for me it was intentional. That’s very important to me and something that I’m very excited about. I’m not afraid of that. I think we live in a highly sexualized world. I think it’s an interesting thing to explore.”

The final season of the series is called Jocelyn Forever and will be the last of the season. Although it was originally announced to be a six-episode series, a source told TVLine that only five episodes were needed after host Sam was brought in for a plot change.
